I believe a supervisor should enhance a supervisees self-confidence through effective support and appropriate opportunities for autonomy. Expectations should be clear and feedback should be respectful, empathic and relevent. Supervisees should be just as comfortable discussing areas for growth as they are discussing successes. It is the supervisors responsibility to communicate effectively and assist the supervisee in developing competent case conceptualization, with clear understanding of theoretical perspective. Crisis managment and the ability to identify potential conflict situations should also be included. The development of a healthy work/life balance and effective self-care strategies are essential components of effective clinical supervision. Last but not least, never underestimate the importance of humor!
